Title

Martin Preshaw - Uilleann Pipe Maker - HOME

Description

Born in Belfast I began to play the uilleann pipes as a teenager having heard Seán Óg Potts perform at a benefit concert. My peers include Johnnie McSherry, Paddy Davey and Eamonn Dillon as we all grew up together in the same part of town trying to be Paddy Keenan.

I struggled with a poorly made half set for over a year when Paddy Davey of Craobh Rua fame introduced me to the late Seán MacAloon, the Fermanagh piper who came to live in Belfast in the 1960's. Seán's influence on the piping scene in the city and indeed, across the north, was immeasureable. He made very well tuned pipes, reeds and generally a source of help and encouragement. I paid Seán UK£200 for a Leo Rowsome chanter and MacAloon set of drones and I was away. Coincidentally, it is the same chanter and drones on which I base my own concert pitch pipes today. Seán also was to give me my early lessons in reed making.

After that I went on to study Irish at the University of Ulster in Coleraine and whilst there had the misfortune to break an excellent reed made by Seán. I was given the number of Finbar McLaughlin who was in Derry City much closer to me than Belfast and I visited with him to have a reed made. Finbar made me an excellent reed in 1989 to replace the damaged one and it still plays well in my Rowsome chanter to this day! It was with Finbar that my education in both reed making and pipe making really began and he has taught me well over the past 11 years and remains a true friend and one of the very few in whose opinion i would have any faith.
