- We have a large pond behind the house that we use for water training and for general canine amusement off-season. I recently noticed that each dog has his own style of frog hunting, not unlike their unique bird hunting behaviors. Harley, the elder German shorthair, will find a frog, point it as he stands chest deep in the water, and remain immobile for 20 minutes at a time. German wirehair Scrub catches big ones which he then carries up the lawn to flip in the air. Young Tank only catches small ones, then drops them on the ground and rolls on them. That is not pretty. I think he likes the popping sound, kind-of like bubble wrap. Rimfire prefers swimming frogs, jumping in after them and trying to run on the water. Cooper, the old Chessy, approaches frog philosophically. He figures that since he’s retired from waterfowling, there’s no reason to get all worked up about frogs. In other words, he sleeps.
