Many people assume that the quality of a self-published book must be inferior to a book produced by a New York publisher. I've read on some sites the amazing assertion that a self-published book cannot be considered for a book award like the Pulitzer and that it won't get the attention of reviewers. Others assume that if a book is self-published, it is all right to cut corners and be unconcerned about its appearance. As long as the words are all correctly spelled, anything is fine. None of that is true.
The market expectation for a self-published book is the same as for any book. People expect good content, sturdy binding, an eye-catching cover, quality paper, crisp print, plus all the words spelled correctly. The self-published book that looks home made is becoming somewhat of a rarity.
