- Jack Karlik is universally known as the "Dean" of Southern California handicappers. Karlik began his involvement with Thoroughbred racing in the 1960s, handicapping for Daily Racing Form. His primary duty with the Form was producing the popular "Sweep" column, a graded handicap with a morning line. After 20 years with the Form, Karlik left to become the exclusive handicapper for the Pasadena Star News/San Gabriel Valley Tribune. In 2003, Karlik's handicap went into syndication, adding the South Bay Daily Breeze. Karlik has been on top of the standings too many times to count and in winter of 2005 at Santa Anita captured the first annual Allan Malamud Handicapping Challenge. Also in 2005, he became only the second newspaper handicapper to sweep the card. A longtime horse owner, Karlik resides in West Los Angeles.
