America's fascination for men with guns is clear back to the dawn of movies. Westerns and Cops & Robbers dramas have been a staple of 20th and now 21st century consciousness.
Well, cowboys are fading from the popular conception of heroes. And the terrible events of September 11th reminded us all that there are legions of heroes among us today in every city, every town, every village across the land. Cops, police officers, sheriffs, law enforcement officers, constables, rangers, peace officers, have become some of the heroes our children already do and will continue to look up to in the years ahead.
They need to be our heroes as well, every day, every year. Whether threats of foreign terror continue into the next Millenium or stop next week, they deserve our respect and our support. In spite of whatever flaws or foibles they may have, they are the front line against those who would harm us, injure us, even kill us. Often working lousy hours for puny pay, making personal sacrifices we can only glimpse in police fiction, these are fundamentally some of our very best and finest who protect and serve.
