Charles Minot Dole, an American skiing pioneer, lobbied President Roosevelt for creation of a Mountain Division. After receiving many letters, President Roosevelt consulted with General Marshall and a call went out for volunteers. Skiers, trappers, mule skinners and woodsmen volunteered. After initially training in the mountains of Washington state, a new home was found for the division. Located outside of Leadville, Colorado, the 10th Mountain Division called Camp Hale home.
