Description
Excerpted from the website:
- Charles Minot Dole, an American skiing pioneer, lobbied President Roosevelt for creation of a Mountain Division. After receiving many letters, President Roosevelt consulted with General Marshall and a call went out for volunteers. Skiers, trappers, mule skinners and woodsmen volunteered. After initially training in the mountains of Washington state, a new home was found for the division. Located outside of Leadville, Colorado, the 10th Mountain Division called Camp Hale home. After training in the mountains of Colorado, the 10th spent time training at lower altitudes at Camp Swift, Texas. The 10th Mountain Division distinguished itself in fighting on the island of Kiska, Alaska and in Italy.
