By splitting engineering coursework into small well-contained subject areas, educators have developed ways to teach complex ideas in a reliable fashion that allows for easy judging of student mastery. The risk associated with this method is that the subject areas can become disjointed and may seem unrelated. Ultimately, the student may not gain an understanding of how the basic engineering concepts and principles interrelate or that there is any reason to "remember" one course as they begin the next. This is traditionally how engineering is taught. Unfortunately, it does not address many of the current and future needs of the information technology workforce including competitiveness, leadership, motivation and ability to work in teams.
