More than one kind of German shepherd

There’s no such thing as a German shepherd, as most breeders will tell you. There’s the American German shepherd, and then there’s the German German shepherd, redundancy intended.

Both are wonderful examples of the German Shepherd breed, but longtime German Shepherd breeder Mary Dygert is partial to the German variety. Mary and husband Ted are owners of TeMar German Shepherd Dogs, a Canby, Oregon, breeder of champion bloodline German shepherds.

The American dog variety is what most people think of when they imagine the breed – black and light tan. The German variety is deep, glossy black with splashes of a deeper brown breeders refer to as “red.”

The German shepherd is a versatile breed

The perfect German shepherd is a dog that can go from intense and focused on the training field, to wary and protective when a stranger is wandering through the backyard, to gentle and relaxed when a child wanders up to give the dog a pat.

Mary, however, is anything but relaxed about the virtues of her dogs. She fell in love with the German shepherd breed as a young girl. Her parents gave her a German shepherd as Mary’s “Schutzengel,” German for “guardian angel." She started working as a breeder some 40 years ago.

“Once you have a German shepherd, you don’t deviate,” she says.

A resource for breeders and German shepherd lore

Mary sees her website not just as a promotional tool for her primary business -- breeding German shepherd dogs -- but as a gathering place for German shepherd enthusiasts and those curious about them.

Visitors to TeMarShepherds.com can learn about German shepherd breed standards and training. The truly hardcore German shepherd fancier can even learn about the schutzhund title, which indicates that a German shepherd has passed a rigorous set of training standards encompassing tracking, obedience and protection skills.

Bring home your own German shepherd Schutzengel

Mary realizes that many people are simply looking for a German shepherd to serve as the family Schutzengel. That’s why TeMar breeds German shepherds for show, for work and for plain old family companionship.

Just tell Mary and Ted what you want from your German shepherd, and they’ll find you the right dog. Of course, that doesn’t mean they send home a precious German shepherd with just anyone. People who want to show and breed their new dog must agree to follow certain rules, and people who just want a family pet must spay or neuter their German shepherd at the appropriate time.

So, what kind of dog will your TeMar German shepherd be? It will be a calm dog; it will be a determined family protector; and, most important, it will be a loyal family companion – your own little Schutzengel.
