- Encaustic is an old medium (dating back to ancient Greece) that combines natural beeswax, tree resin and pigment. Each layer of medium is placed onto the painting and carefully fused with heat (propane torch, heat gun, iron or even a light bulb). Layers can be scraped back to reveal what was created before or can be built up and melted down.
