Description

Northeast Press was founded in 1849 with the printing of the South Shields Gazette this is now the UK’s oldest provincial evening newspaper. The Gazette, however is a relatively new title to the company which acquired it tens years ago and which, for 130 years until its acquisition in 1999 by Johnston Press was Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers. Founded in 1873 by Mr Samuel Storey (great grandfather of Sir Richard Storey the last chairman of Northeast Press) founded the Sunderland Echo. The Hartlepool Mail came on board in 1877, serving major population centres of the north’s county of Cleveland.

At various times weekly papers were added to the Company’s publications e.g. a free newspaper for Washington New Town the Washington Echo was launched in 1969.

In 1976 the Echo moved from the centre of Sunderland to a new plant at Pennywell, close to the trunk road system on the west-side of city.
