Strathnairn Heritage Association

Description

Strathnairn Heritage Association is a non-profit making organisation whose aims are to gather and share all aspects of our Scottish Highland history, Gaelic culture and customs from prehistory to the present. Strathnairn is located between the world-renowned Loch Ness (of Monster fame) to the west and the expansive wilds of the Monadhliath Mountains to the east. To the south is Dunmaglass, home of the mighty and ancient Clan MacGillivray. To the north is Daviot, which is only a short distance from Culloden Moor - site of the infamous and bloody battle of 1746 between the Jacobites of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Hanoverian Government led by the infamous Butcher Cumberland. If your surname belongs to one of the great Clan Chattan clans such as MacKintosh, Shaw, MacGillivray, MacBain, MacPhail, MacPherson, MacPhail (or any variation in the spelling of these) then your origins may well be right here in Strathnairn. Strathnairn is rich in archaeology, including stone circles, chambered cairns, standing stones, hut circles and Pictish graves and other sites relating to our rich Celtic heritage. The Strath begins at Dunmaglass to the south west and heads north east to Aberarder, the source of the River Nairn which passes the main settlements of Flichity, Brin, Farr, Dunlichity, Tordarroch, Bunachton, Inverarnie, Daviot, Nairnside and Clava. This web site aims to share our heritage with you whether or not your origins belong here in Strathnairn.
