We grew up in an environment filled with gifts. Our mom had a gift closet and prided herself on always being able to give a gift in a moment’s notice, and of course, wrapped in unusual ways. We credit our sense of style, and that extra special “shopping” gene we inherited, to our mom, and our offbeat sense of humor to our dad, who was renowned as a lover of gadgets. Our official entry into the gift industry came in the ‘80’s when Little Spoon worked for the industry’s most cutting-edge rep firm.
We weren’t always Spoons. We got the name back in the late 1970’s when we started a catering and party planning business. One evening we organized a theme party for friends so we could practice our craft. Dessert was yogurt sundaes. To serve the dessert, Big Spoon brought out her vast collection of spoons. (Her penchant for spoons started when she went to school in Holland and received a bunch of sterling silver souvenir spoons as departing gifts from her Dutch friends.) That night tons of spoons – all sizes and designs – were spread all over the table. Among the guests was Alan, the best friend of one of their friends, “Morty”, a TV producer. We had heard much about Alan and had wanted to meet him for a long time.
Alan, about 6’1”, wound up eating his sundae with a tiny 3” demitasse spoon. The tall man with the short spoon became the running joke throughout the rest of the evening. Little Spoon called Alan at his office the next day to say how much we enjoyed finally meeting him. When the person, who answered the phone, asked who was calling, Little Spoon figured Alan would have no idea who she was if she used her real last name, so she simply said “Tell him it’s one of the Spoon Sisters.” Alan knew exactly who it was!
