In an effort to raise money for the underprivilged, cunning South African philanthropists (one can only assume) have planned a series of Unite of the Stars evenings that promises to top similar evenings that were held last year: this year, the line-up includes such prominent stars as Will Young, Banarama and Rene Olstead (whoever the fuck that is). In other news, a spokeperson for the underprivileged reportedly said “thanks for nothing, you cocks“, particularly seeing as it is not inconceivable that any extra money raised from the “gala evenings” (which is highly bloody unlikely) will probably just go straight to the performers, who are unquestionably the most underprivileged bunch of losers on Earth.
The thing that embarrasses me most is that these little shindigs are actually considered newsworthy by South African papers. Clearly there’s not a lot happening in the motherland at the moment. How sad.
Frankly, these fucking Unite of the Stars things are a shocking indictment on general South African taste and culture. Are we really that pathetic? Before answering, remember that superstars like Dana Winner, Belinda Carlisle and Michael Learns to Rock are still very highly regarded in some, um, “kringe”. And seeing as these Unite of the Stars events are billed as charitable, the necessary implication is that people with money will actually pay to see them. Either someone hasn’t done their homework, or South Africa is totally fucked.
