Title

- Speaking Machine - Toastmasters Club 1528

Description

The following excerpts of minutes begin October 28, 1987. In them, it reads that the meetings were being held at the Elk Grove Library, the names of 13 people were listed as present, there was a discussion, which was put on hold, of a name for the group, temporary officers were elected and the Word of the Day was ‘critical’. By November 18, 1987, the minutes reflect that the name for the club had been narrowed down to three: Nite Talkers, Master Toastmasters and the Lean Mean Speaking Machine. They write the L.M.* Speaking Machine dropping the Lean Mean deciding it was too long--thus becoming the Speaking Machine. By December 1987, the club is deciding to start putting out flyers and newspaper articles to let the public know that a Toastmasters club is being formed. They give a 5 minute Round Robin on “Relinquishing Control”, Easy Table Topics for Beginners, How to Amend a Motion and a Motion to Reconsider, a presentation about a Speechcraft Program and How to Analysis Your Audience. By January 1988, the Club started a checking account; in February they are making plans to participate in the upcoming Club Speech Contest and moving forward with plans for a Charter Party and Julie Potiker receives the ‘Bone Award’; in March a Sgt at Arms is appointed; and on April 4, 1988, Speaking Machine, Club #1528 is officially chartered.

The Speaking Machine Toastmasters Club has been a constant asset to our community and to our District for the past 16 years. We have helped countless individuals grow beyond their wildest expectations in both communication AND leadership skills. We have helped timid, shy individuals find expression and receive job promotions. We have been a resource for individuals who are already skilled in speaking to polish their lectern presence and their performance. Our club is one of the most active in mentoring and producing future leaders for our District. Those communication and leadership skills have in turn fostered community involvement with local Youth Leadership programs for our youth and providing judges for various community sponsored youth speech contests.

Our club is committed to maintaining the highest club standards in the Toastmasters International program and for most of our 16 years, our club has achieved the status of President’s Distinguished, the highest award a club can achieve.
