Today, in respect of its size and track mileage, the Southern Electric remains a disproportionately large player in the field of railway business, particularly on the passenger side, within the United Kingdom’s railway network. Six train operating companies continue to operate electric trains over the south-east third rail dc network: Connex South Eastern, New Southern Railway (formerly Connex South Central), South West Trains, Thameslink, Gatwick Express and Silverlink. Eurostar run Channel Tunnel passenger trains over the Southern. Also English Welsh & Scottish (EWS) and Freightliner run freight services over the Southern. In May 2000 the Southern Electric list of train operators was increased by the addition of Anglia Railways with their service between Basingstoke and East Anglia. In 2000 South West Train won an extended franchise which operates for 20 years. At the same time Connex lost the competition for a 20 year franchise for their South Central franchise to GoVia. August 2001 GoVia formally took over the remaining period of the original South Central franchise from Connex. Further details of the franchise take over and arrangements can be obtained from Live Rail.
