Description
In an effort to create a large elite level soccer club that can compete with the so-called Super clubs of the United States Youth Soccer Association, the clubs formerly known as Torrance United and Manhattan Beach Hurricanes have merged to form South Bay Soccer Club. Modeled after large successful clubs such as the San Diego Nomads and the Colorado Rush (themselves the product of a similar merger), SBSC will field 30 boys and girls teams aged Under 10 through Under 19 for the 2002-2003 season.
A major component of taking a collection of teams and transforming them into a true club is a singular, unified vision. In order to articulate this vision to all the teams, SBSC has taken a step unprecedented in the South Bay soccer scene by hiring a full time Director of Coaching. The DOC is intimately involved in all aspects of the club, providing some training for all teams in the club and overseeing all coaches. Todd Saldana, the DOC for the new club, is the former head coach at UCLA and a local product out of South High School now living in El Segundo.
The mission of the club is to be the premier soccer club in the South Bay. It will provide opportunities for players to receive professional coaching, for players to improve their skills, to compete for state and national championships, to vie for placement on Olympic Development teams, to earn college scholarships, and to play on age-level US National teams. At the same time, the club will have multiple teams in each age group to provide opportunities for all skill levels to improve. In addition to providing quality soccer training, SBSC aims to enhance the enjoyment of the game by bringing all age groups together in one soccer family.
