About
Four hundred years ago, everyone believed that the Earth was at the centre of the Universe. We saw the planets of the Solar System as five points of light and wondered at their curious motions. Today, I can publish a website with detailed information about the nine planets in our Solar System, including close up pictures from eight of them. I think we're making progress!
We're living in amazing times. I made this website in August 1999. Since then I've had over 200,000 visitors from more than 100 different countries. It's been fantastic to receive Emails from so many enthusiastic and curious people with questions, comments or just a few kind words. I hope that this site has proved useful and interesting...
The kind of questions that I get asked remind me of the sort of thing that I used to ask when I was a child. Since then I've been lucky enough to have the opportunity to make study astronomy for my Ph.D., and I have been able to learn first-hand about some of the wonders of the Universe. This website is my way of giving something back, with the hope that a few of my visitors might be inspired to keep asking questions.
