Description

February 14, 2006 marked the eighth anniversary of the launching of the WSWS. When we began this project, it was our intention to provide daily commentary and analysis, from the standpoint of the interests of the international working class, of developments in economy, politics and culture. We were convinced that the WSWS would find a response among those looking for (1) an uncompromising critique of all aspects of capitalist society and (2) a coherent perspective for the building of a new international socialist movement.

During the past eight years, the World Socialist Web Site has won a significant worldwide audience. More than 20,000 readers access our site every day. Our readers turn to the WSWS each day to deepen their understanding of world events. They invariably find in our site a trenchant answer to the massive torrent of propaganda and misinformation that pours out of the corporate-controlled media.

The deepening of the world economic and political crisis places ever greater demands on the WSWS. The inauguration of the Bush administration for a second term poses a great danger to workers all over the world. The US government has pledged to continue waging its war against Iraq, has issued new threats against Syria and Iran, and has declared its intention to launch military attacks against any country that stands in its way. The ruling classes in every country are carrying out a massive assault on living standards, social programs and democratic rights.
