Description

The majority of our birds are raised in several bird buildings with access to outdoor flights during warmer months. The main bird building is set up with individual breeding cages for Canaries, Goldfinches, Gouldian, Society, Java and Zebra Finches. Numerous large flight cages which house young birds and seperate species of colony bred finches line the entrance of the finch building. All birds recieve full spectrum lighting and natural sunlight. The climate in our bird buildings is controlled and does not go below 60° in winter or above 93° (hottest days) in summer. We do not keep the bird room at a steady 75-80°'s because we feel it is best to aclimatize the birds to variation in tempertures. This practice seems to make hardier, less fragile birds!

I have been raising one kind of bird or another all my life. As a child, I trapped pigeons & built cages for them at home to breed in. I've kept almost all varieties of cage birds from Cut-throats to Weavers. Pheasants have also been a favorite of mine, at 15 years old I started breeding Golden & Silver Pheasants. I bought a Double-Yellow-Headed Amazon from a breeder for $55.00 when I was 17 years old. My first pair of Quakers costs $35.00 so as you can tell I have been breeding birds for 30 years or more. Gamebirds such as Barbery & Chuckar Partridge have also been a hobby of mine - selectively breeding for the biggest Jumbo Bobwhites. These days my main interest focuses on various Lady Gouldian mutations & a variety of Finches.

My mom worked at a Pet store the whole time I was growing up so I have been around animals all my life including everything from Chinchillas to Chameleons. She also raised AKC Siberian Huskys & Doberman Pinshers. I handled my first Siberian Husky (Winnie) at an AKC Dog Show in North Carolina when I was 10 years old. My experience with baby birds began when my first pair of budgies had a clutch of babies. I though it was so amazing how something so small and "ugly" could turn into a beautiful bird. At 12 years old I got to handfed baby Cockatiels for my mom's Pet Store. I started working there when I was 13 taking care of the animals, bathing dogs to be groomed, and the dreaded cleaning of the fish tanks! I remember a Indian Ring Neck named Josh that would wander around the store purposely tossing the bird toys off the pegs just to watch me pick them up. I thought he was the coolest since I had only seen one other bird talk before (a Scarlet Macaw at Dr. Pet ). I always wanted to have birds but my mom didn't really want them in the house. After moving out and started my life I have always had birds. The real obsession with birds began when I moved from Ohio to Arkansas about 8 years ago. I bought my first pair of Java Finches, CFW Zebra Finches, then Fawn & Normals. Then I had to have Lovebirds & Cockatiels. I meet up with Paul in 1997 who also had a passion for birds particularly Gouldian Finches. Splitting the cost we bought our first 5 pair of Gouldian Finches and decided with all the birds we had that we would start a bird business. After much deliberation we decided to name our bird business Singing Wings Aviary. We have been breeding & raising birds together ever since.
