Simply Offsite was founded in 2005, although our roots were first developed in 1998 as the online backup service provider, Back-It-Up Dot Com. Today, Simply Offsite is expanding its leading online backup service to provide managed backups and at the same time branching out to bring other managed services to the SMB, SOHO and home computer markets.
In the mid 90's while attending university, founder Mike Lavender realized the need for an affordable offsite backup solution. Many of the faculty and students had no backups. At the time academic institutions were unable or unwilling to provide the resources required to provide backup options to faculty, let alone students. Small business and home computer users had even fewer options. Tape drives existed however, they were unreliable, expensive and still had the problem of getting backups offsite.
By the mid to late 90's software options became available to provide offsite backups over slow internet connections. At the same time dial-up internet connections, with the advent of the 56K modem, had gotten faster making a typical 200MB backup a reasonable task.
