Description
Sigma, the leading television station in Cyprus, celebrates ten years of broadcasting this year. On the air 24 hours a day, seven days a week since 1995, Sigma attracts a mainly young, urban audience in the 18-45 age group. It currently rates first of six national broadcasters in terms of total viewership with a 33% mean share and 40% in its target 18-45 age group.
One of the keys to Sigma's success is the fact that it broadcasts more locally- produced programmes than any of its competitors. Prime time zones are split among local (40%) US (25%), mainland Greek (15%) and other (20%) programming. The latter category consists chiefly of extremely popular Latin American telenovelas.
Sigma licenses content directly from all the major US studios and from the largest international distribution companies. As part of an affiliation agreement with Star Channel, it rebroadcasts programmes from the mainland Greek station which, in turn, screens some of Sigma’s productions. Plans for future co-productions are currently at an advanced stage. Sigma also has a rebroadcast agreement with MAD TV, the leading music TV station in the Greek world.
