Description
Shaws San Francisco began in 1931 on West Portal Avenue as a Karmel Korn shop developed by Douglas Shaw. During Douglas Shaws' ownership he developed a gourmet line of chocolates and ice cream. He thrived in business and outgrew the West Portal manufacturing site. This led to the opening of the Shaws in Millbrae, where the candy continues to be hand made using copper kettles.
Several years later, Jack Shaw, Douglas' brother franchised Shaws into a fifty-strong Californian candy company. For many years Shaws grew, they even beat See's off of West Portal. Finally, it's rumored that a finance company stole money from the franchises which eventually doomed the chain.
Now remaining are the independently owned and operated Shaw's. There is our Shaws on West Portal Avenue, the Shaws manufacturer in Millbrae and Shaw's in Yorba Lynda.
