In 1992 my wife and I rented a weekend home in the Catskill Mountains to escape the blistering New York City summers. It was here I started my first garden, or should I say my wife pointed and I dug holes. If you don't know the Catskills, that would be holes filled with rocks: little rocks, big rocks, medium rocks, and more rocks. At that point I knew nothing about gardening but through time learned to overcome or at least co-exist with the challenges of gardening in the Catskills. Sure we're at 1800 feet, the mountains periodically block the sun, there are plenty of insects, foxes, raccoons, bears, deer and jackalopes that eat what you grow. But despite this, each year we're able to harvest more than enough for family and friends. But what about all the pictures and endless discussions about our garden? What about all the gardeners we never get to talk with? What difficulties do people face in other climates? What do their bugs look like? What do they grow that we don't grow? I want to know.
