About SDWF
The concept behind sustainable dolphin-watching in the Shannon estuary was discussed at a forum hosted by Kilrush Urban District Council as part of the Kilrush 1500 celebrations 8th May, 1999 at Kilrush Adventure Centre, Kilrush, County Clare. The forum was addressed by the then Minister for Arts, Culture, Heritage and the Islands Silé de Valera TD, who expressed her commitment to this ambition (see report)
SDWF was established in March 2000 and was granted charitable staus in 2003 “to develop and provide educational awareness and conservation of the Shannon dolphins and other wildlife in the region”.
The SDWF remit is supprted by a range of government agencies, local authorities and development groups but funding is mainly through research and monitoring contracts.
