How Do I Know I Have Hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoidal symptoms often begin with painless rectal bleeding. Most people note rectal bleeding because blood appears bright red on toilet tissue or stool. Rectal bleeding may, however, be a symptom of other anal-rectal disorders. It is important to bring this symptom to your physician’s attention when it occurs. Although some symptomatic (bleeding) hemorrhoids subside within a week or two, others progress over time. Painless hemorrhoidal bleeding often becomes associated with rectal itching, discharge, and tissue prolapse (bulging) through the rectum. What is A Hemorrhoid?

Hemorrhoids are swollen (enlarged, dilated) veins (varicose veins) inside (internal) or outside (external) the anus that are usually caused by increased pressure, such as straining when constipated or during pregnancy. Hemorrhoids can cause pain, rectal bleeding, burning, clots, and itching.
