- The South African government since 1999, have explained away the stranding/drowning of new-born Cape Fur Seals, in their tens of thousands, as a natural annual event that has been going on for eons. The reality is quite something different. It is a scientific fact that eons ago or prior to the first European exploitation or harvesting of seals began as early as the 1500’s, breeding herds of seals were only found on the offshore islands in southern Africa.
