This really is more aptly named "Crescentia's Concert" because you wouldn't be reading about if it wasn't for Crescentia Healy True. I first met Crescentia at a concert in Durham. I was quite bald, having just completed my chemotherapy. She had recently found out that her cancer was back. As it happens we shared the same doctor, Eric Winer, at Dana Farber and we started to share stories. We quickly agreed that we should put together a concert to raise money for breast cancer. The idea just sat there for a few months till I ran into her again. She apologized profusely for not being able to do more because so much of her energy was going into taking care of her family and fighting the disease, but was still 100% percent committed to making it happen. That was all the inspiration I needed. I called my friend Dana Marshall at the River, we got together over drinks, emailed our friends, formed the committee and the rest, as they say, is history. Not only was she the inspiration, she was salvation -- bringing in sponsors, finding a great deal on the t-shirts, lending her fund-raising expertise -- always there no matter what the damn disease was doing to her on any given day. She who was facing the scariest thing in the world was the one who could make us laugh, get us dancing, and above all teach us about "clarity." She always described cancer as a gift that brought her clarity. She found clarity of purpose -- raising her kids and fighting for her health as well as clarity of conscience -- having the world's best attitude and fighting for all the things she truly believed in. She counted her breaks and her blessings and never complained about all the breaks she didn't get. Crescentia was compassionate, funny, brilliant, warm, sexy and beautiful with hair and without. Life will never be the same -- but then it hasn't been since the first time we met her.
