Reading Symphony Orchestra (RSO)

Description

About the RSO

The RSO is an amateur orchestra. We have a professional conductor, Stefan Hofkes, and professional leader, and many of our players are semi-professional. Usually the orchestra has about 60 or 70 members.

It came from the seeds of the pre-war Berkshire Symphony Orchestra, which had been disbanded in 1939, when the country's menfolk were called to fight. In 1944, a number of its players started the new orchestra.

10 years ago, when we celebrated our golden jubilee, the RSO formed a new chamber orchestra, the Reading Sinfonietta. Made up of members of the RSO, the Sinfonietta concentrates on performance of small-scale works not practicable for the large-scale symphony orchestra. Since then, the Sinfonietta has presented a summer concert every July. This has become a most enjoyable and popular event for audience and members alike.
