Road Cone

Description

Founded in 1992, Road Cone has released underground rock, guitar-based improv and organica recordings with a focus on artists who transcend narrow genre identities. Consider Hochenkeit's electronic-damaged world-folk, Loren MazzaCane Connors' gorgeous solo guitar abstracts or the layered minimalism of Jackie-O Motherfucker's avant-psych basement Americana.

The Tarantistic Seed Plot of a World To Come compilation 7" was released in December 1992 and included the vinyl debuts of Bugskull, Junket and noisemeister Daniel Menche, plus contributions from Refrigerator, Hazel and Loren Mazzacane (as Loren Connors was then known). That was soon followed by 7" singles from Bugskull (RoCo 002: "Fences"), Junket (RoCo 003: "Everclear") and Loren Mazzacane (RoCo 005: Mother & Son EP). The first Road Cone CD, Loren MazzaCane's Moonyean, was issued in mid-1994, followed soon after by the debut Bugskull album, the lo-fi classic Phantasies & Senseitions.

Ten years later, it's clear the diversity inherent in the compilation set the tone of Road Cone's approach to releasing music. Abstract beauty, noise, ecstatic disorientation and creative imagination cannot be limited to one genre, and so Road Cone plowed on, indifferent to trends, market niches, financially sound "investments" or simplistic label identities. Instead, I chose to earmark oft-overlooked idiosyncratic genius (a la Loren Connors) which can fall through the cracks of the underground, with the hope that the releases give the artists some of the attention they deserve. Plus, the artists alone decided what you hear on their Road Cone disc (hmmm, does that phrase sound familiar?).
