Title
- Upper Sacramento River Exchange Dunsmuir California
Description
We are an exciting stewardship program providing free public information, community gatherings, and education about our unique Upper Sacramento River watershed. We exist through great support and funding from the Cantara Trustee Council. The Council was established to distribute fourteen million dollars of settlement funds over five years for river restoration and education. Funds were acquired through litigation following the disastrous 1991 chemical spill at Cantara Loop. If you'd like to know more about the Council and its projects and grants, give us a call.
We hope that in the years and generations to come, there will be an even greater awareness and understanding of the inherent value of our watersheds and a greater desire to work together to maintain them as healthy ecosystems that we can all depend on and continue to share and enjoy.
In a way it all began with "the spill" when a tanker filled with a substance rendered toxic when mixed with water plunged into the Upper Sacramento River at Cantara Loop. The spill poisoned the waters for miles and miles down river and a cloud of noxious fumes and despair hung over Dunsmuir.
