Get to know us! Ringing Mountain Imports is a collaborative effort of many, led by Principal Stephen Donato and Director Kevin C. Hunt.
An American kid whose family has been in the 'new world' for many generations, I often found myself jealous of the traditions- religious and otherwise- of my friends whose parents or grandparents still spoke a different language. I spent time with my Great Aunt Edna researching our family history, eager to discover a hidden exotic ancestor. In the end, I learned that my family had ties to England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, and Czechoslovakia. My own Great Grandmother had arrived by boat as a child. But despite this rich heritage, all remnants of the cultural traditions of my ancestors had vanished by the time even my parents were born. With time, I have reclaimed some of these lost treasures, and can even be seen in my family tartan kilt from time to time. But this search helped me appreciate the importance of culture and tradition, and to witness the ease with which it can be lost forever.
I feel that Ringing Mountain Imports brings together the two very difficult goals of preserving cultural heritage and encouraging sustainable economic self-sufficiency in a most elegant way. For the Tibetans, these are two immense struggles, especially noting the reality that these resilient people are refugees who cannot freely return to their homeland. To honor the Tibetan perseverance by providing an outlet for their exceptional handiwork without asking them to conform to outside norms is itself an honor.
