Title

Richard Archer - Furniture Maker : South Devon Craft & Furniture Centre

Description

After completing a traditional 5 year apprenticeship on leaving school, I worked for some 4 or 5 different firms, each one teaching me a different approach to the design and making of fine furniture. I decided to take the plunge and set up on my own some 18 years ago and then to relocate to Devon from Kent where I had been previously based. My work ranges from the smallest jewellery box right through to complete room scheme. Influences range from the Arts and Crafts movement in my training days to very contemporary work of today but always with the emphasis on traditional methods of construction and using native timbers where ever possible, some of which are cut and dried by me at the workshop. Visitors are always welcome at the workshop, but a phone call before hand is always appreciated.

Working almost entirely to commission each piece is designed closely with the client to satisfy the particular need and just as importantly to fit within the budget. As each piece is unique the illustrations should be taken as a guide only. There are usually 4 or 5 pieces to view in the gallery adjoining the workshop together with current work in progress and visitors are more than welcome.

Predominately English hardwoods but if imported woods are used they are from sustainable stocks and usually are selected because there is no native wood of the correct colour or characteristic.
