Description
When I say, "Mama made me do it", I don't mean she made me do it. When you grow up eating incredible food night after night, then go off on your own, it's just a matter of survival. There's just so much red sauce you can carry across the country. I think my "Rudy's Red" with meatballs and sausage comes pretty close to mama's.
I was born in southern Italy the youngest of six, in the tiny village of Rende, nestled the hills of Calabria. I grew up in Toronto, Canada where you'll find one of the largest concentrations of Italians outside Italy. Family life revolved around food and the kitchen was center stage. Papa made his wine, sausages and cured meats in the fall. Mama bottled the tomato sauce, marinated eggplant and peppers. When friends and family dropped by we would gather around the oversized kitchen table and within seconds, plate after plate of goodies would appear. The wine would flow. The women would chatter and, eventually, the men would sing. These are great memories.
So, here I am into my sixth year at RIALTO continuing the tradition. The open kitchen feels like part of the dining room, just like home. Come in, sit, relax, have a glass of vino. Mange!
