RetroStatic was conceptualized in 1997. The site name was devised in 1999, and the site itself was released in April 2000. The word "RetroStatic" became a registered trademark in 2002. It is self proclaimed as the first site to categorize 1980s TV shows and cartoons alphabetically, with intro videos. It evolved to include 80s commercials in 2002, becoming the first site of its kind to offer this feature. RetroStatic endured various web hosting challenges after 2003, resulting in nearly a full year of downtime. It was then brought back with a custom coded template in 2004. The site has received various website awards in the late 1990s, including a feature from the late Yahoo Internet Magazine.
