About Us
The Resourceful Homeschooler is the Gerstmann family—Ricka, Les, and our two sons, Paul and Kalex—a family of independent learners who live in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. We all tend to be “do-it-yourselfers”, but recognize that not everyone has the same inclination.
The Resourceful Homeschooler supports independent learners of all ages, supplying books and materials to “do it yourself”, as well as “everything-in-the-box“ kits. We are always on the lookout for great new materials. If you know of something interesting, please tell us about it. You may also call us toll free at (877)523-0494. When it comes to deciding what to carry in our inventory, our rule is simple: if we don’t love it, we don’t carry it.
We sometimes define ourselves as unschoolers or eclectic homeschoolers. We began exploring community-based education choices when our oldest son was born, and we were one of the founding families of the Creative Arts Charter School in San Francisco, California. Our kids attended alternative schools and traditional public schools in San Francisco and the Pacific Northwest. We believe that homeschooling is best by far for our family. In the absence of that option, a parent and staff managed, child-directed learning model like the Creative Arts Charter School (which will forever be known in our family as “Our School”) is a viable alternative.
