- LOS ANGELES -- A 18-year-old day laborer who allegedly broke into a Santa Monica condominium and raped a woman when she returned home hours later was ordered to stand trial Thursday. Luis Mario Lopez, who was 17 at the time of the alleged attack, is being prosecuted as an adult on five counts of forcible rape and one count each of forcible oral copulation, sexual penetration by a foreign object, first-degree residential burglary and unlawfully taking the victim's car. He was arrested while driving the woman's 2003 Mercedes-Benz SL 500 convertible. Evidence allegedly linking Lopez to the crime was recovered from the Mercedes and his home. The woman was confronted and tied up after she came home to find her condo ransacked. She was repeatedly attacked over a four-hour period, suffering injuries that included a broken nose. Lopez allegedly entered the victim's home some time that morning through a doggie door. He had previously done some work at the 42-year-old victim's home. Santa Monica police Chief Tim Jackman called the crime "vicious and brutal" and said authorities believe the woman was "specifically targeted."
