Project Management Software, Multiple Project Planning Software
RationalPlan is a project management software suite developed by Stand By Soft, a company founded in 1997. It is written in the Java programming language and running on multiple platforms like Mac OS X, Windows and Linux.
The product is mainly used by novice project managers without to much experience in the project management area. On the other hand due to the more advanced features the application is also considered an alternative to Microsoft Project with multiple projects management capabilities. It can be used to manage projects in various domains like construction, engineering, services&consulting, software development or any other business field.
The software is covering project management area from WBS construction, project planning and scheduling to critical path management, overallocated resources detection, progress tracking, cost estimation, etc. Gantt chart support as well as various time line reports are also provided.
History
The first version of RationalPlan was released for Windows and Linux in June 2007. By October 2007 a new product RationalPlan Multi Project was released while the original product was renamed RationalPlan Single Project. At the beginning of March 2008 it was released RationalPlan Project Viewer a free viewer for the entire RationalPlan suite.
By late March 2008 a Mac OS X custom version was released.
Support for importing Microsoft Project files was added in May 2008. The development continued until the complete integration with Microsoft Project.
The forth product of the suite, RationalPlan Project Server, was released in June 2010 as a free beta version.

Products
RationalPlan Single Project
A project management product covering project management areas starting with WBS construction, project planning and scheduling to critical path management, overallocated resources detection, progress tracking, cost estimation, etc.
RationalPlan Multi Project
A project portfolio solution to keep projects in one central location. The projects can share resources or have dependencies between tasks that do not belong to the same project.
RationalPlan Project Viewer
Free viewer for both the above products. It can be used to open files generated with RationalPlan Single Project or RationalPlan Multi Project.
RationalPlan Project Server
A centralized solution to manage multiple projects, with concurrent access from multiple users. It offers the possibility to connect to it through a Web browser or by using RationalPlan Multi Project.
Integration
The applications are running on Java 1.5 or higher and using an XML file type storage.
