Rackliffe Pottery: Blue Hill Maine's family-owned hand-thrown pottery in famous blueberry patterns

Description

Beautiful, durable pottery is our goal

Our pottery style is one of classic pottery made from native clay, shaped on a potter's wheel, gloriously colored with lead-free glazes, and fired to 2100 degrees. Our designs come from the world around us: blueberry, cranberry and wild rose, leaves and animals of land and sea.

Hotter, longer firing is the secret to the durability of our earthenware pots. Traditionally, earthenware is considered rather fragile. This is due to its low firing temperature. If you wanted to, you could fire a batch of earthenware at the minimum temperature, say 1500 to 1600 degrees, every day, cool it down quickly with a cooling system and "move more product".

We have higher standards than most. We like to take a little extra time to fire it hotter, and let it cool down naturally. Heating a natural material like clay creates internal stresses. Cooling it down quickly locks the stresses in, making the object more likely to break. Our intensely hot firing, at 2100 degrees Fahrenheit, makes a tougher pot. Cooling it down slowly (it takes about a day and a half) lets the internal stresses relax. So our pots are tougher to start with and they're the most relaxed pottery you can buy!
