The state of Qatar lies midway along the Western coast of the Arabian Gulf. The country comprises a peninsula of 11,437 square kilometers and several islands. The most important of these islands are Hawar, Halul, Jinan and Shra'ouh. The peninsula of Qatar is located between 24° 27' and 26° 10' north latitudes and 50° 45' and 51° 40' east longitudes. It borders the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to the south. The United Arab Emirates and the State of Bahrain are located southeast and west of the Qatar peninsula respectively. The State of Qatar generally consists of flat rocky surfaces. Some low hills and sand dunes are found in the western and southern parts of the country.
The population of Qatar is estimated at over 600,000, the vast majority of whom live in and around the capital city of Doha.
History
Evidence of early habitation in the 4th Century BC in the area, which is now Qatar, is demonstrated in numerous artifacts, such as inscriptions, rock carvings and fine examples of pottery. The country’s ancient history is closely linked to the history of the Gulf region and the Arabian Peninsula in general.
