Title

PRRI - Passaic River Restoration Initiative

Description

For more than a century, the Passaic River has been damaged by intensive industrial and urban developments along its shores. Hundreds, if not thousands, of sources have contributed to the distressed condition of the river, including factories, municipalities, waste sites and sewage treatment plants. The Corps of Engineers-led PRRI is a goal-oriented public works program that will utilize local, state and federal resources, along with private funds, to address the environmental problems of the Passaic. The program will capitalize on the expertise and experience of the Corps in working with local communities to find the most feasible environmental restoration and economic revitalization measures available. Over the years, the Corps has undertaken many successful waterway restoration projects that have yielded effective results in a timely and resource-efficient manner. This new initiative holds substantially more promise for cleaning up the Passaic River in a faster, fairer, and more effective manner than would be the case under the Superfund paradigm.
