Presbyterian Church USA
Description
The Presbyterian Church (USA) finds its roots in John Calvin and the Reformation. In the United States there are a number of Presbyterian denominations, resulting from divisions and mergers over the last 200 years. They all claim a commitment to Jesus Christ as the Head of Church, with varying interpretations regarding His will for the church. Since it's unlikely that the Lord is telling people conflicting messages, no doubt some of us will be greatly surprised on that great Awakening Day!
The denomination this site is primarily concerned with has its headquarters in Louisville, KY, and consists of approximately 11,000 congregations across the country. These congregations are arranged into geographical groupings called a "presbytery." The 173 presbyteries are likewise grouped into 17 regional synods. Once every two years, for about a week, commissioners are elected to represent each presbytery at a General Assembly.
While we Presbyterians give an inordinate amount of time and energy to our various buildings, in-house structures and church issues, at our best moments we seek a personal relationship with the Risen Christ, the renewal of individual lives and the reformation of organizations and institutions.
