The Powers Museum focuses on Carthage's history with annual exhibits of a selected theme from the post Civil War period to the 20th century. Also, the museum fosters the study of Carthage history through use of its archives and reference library, educational programming, and cooperative community events. Opened in 1988, the museum was created by the generosity of lifelong Carthaginian Marian Powers Winchester. At her death in 1981, Mrs. Winchester left a bequest to the City of Carthage "for the establishment and operation of a museum for the citizens of Carthage and the surrounding area." She requested the museum's name honor her parents Dr. Everett Powers (1869-1954) and Marian Wright Powers (1880-1969).
As stated in Marian Powers Winchester's will, the Powers Museum was created to "house, preserve and display ...my family possessions of value, ...all things of interest historically or otherwise, ...as well as other museum collections, works of art, and objects of a similar nature." The Powers Museum Board with the guidance of consultants, estate advisors and museum staff, has sought to interpret and display those family possessions in a manner which tells the story of the Powers family as well as the broader story of Carthage's history.
