Pacific Marine Conservation Council

Description

Pacific Marine Conservation Council (PMCC) is a nonprofit, public benefit corporation, with offices in Astoria, Oregon, Port Townsend, Washington, and Arcata, California. PMCC has a diverse 16-member Board of Directors representing commercial and sport fishermen, marine scientists and other constituent groups, all dedicated to sustaining healthy and diverse marine ecosystems.

PMCC operates under a non-traditional and highly productive system. Our five full time staff members work within a cross-hierarchy, each overseeing a key part of the organization. People often ask why it is that we are so effective in our efforts to affect fisheries policy through community-based initiatives. The reasons are in no small part due to carefully thought out team strategies, credible scientific research, and ongoing input from our allies in the scientific, fishing and environmental communities.

PMCC is familiar and deeply involved with West Coast groundfish policy, management, research and socioeconomic issues. The organization actively participates in state and federal management processes and holds positions on the Pacific Fishery Management Council's panels and advisory committees. PMCC has published comprehensive reports and organized regional groundfish conferences and workshops devoted to educating stakeholders and improving the science used to assess and manage the region's fisheries. These include the 1998 report "Diminishing Returns: The Status of West Coast Rockfish," the 1999 Rockfish Forum, the 2002 Fishermen's Forum on Marine Protected Areas, and the 2004 report to Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, "Survey and Analysis of Fishery Management Plans with Application to Oregon's Nearshore Fishery" .
