Description
I am a South African trained, and board certified Plastic surgeon, and a full member of the Association of Plastic & Reconstructive Surgeons of South Africa. I graduated with first class honours from the University of Cape Town Medical School, and received prizes for academic achievement in Surgery (1988)and top final year student in Paediatrics (1989). After completing my internship at Groote Schuur Hospital (venue of the first heart transplant), I travelled abroad, working in the UK for a period, before joining P&O/ Princess Cruises as ships doctor aboard luxury liners.
On returning to Cape Town, I commenced training in general surgery after which I completed a residency in Plastic Surgery. After passing my Specialist Board Examination in Plastic Surgery (first attempt), I remained on as consultant / attending plastic surgeon at Groote Schuur Hospital, before moving into private practice, at City Park Hospital (since renamed the Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital) - a large private hospital in the central business district of Cape Town.
I am a sessional consultant / attending plastic surgeon at the Red Cross Childrens Hospital Cleft Palate Unit, and at a regional spinal injuries unit. I also maintain an interest in the Combined Breast Clinic at Groote Schuur Hospital, where I previously worked as consultant, and gained wide experience in both prosthetic and autologous (body's own tissue) breast reconstruction, including the TRAM flap.
