Welcome To Piedmont Yoga Studio

Description

On March 15th Piedmont Yoga Studio celebrated its 18th year on Piedmont Avenue, and on April 1 we will have been at our new site for three years. During the past 18 years, we have grown from a single, small studio classroom (many of you remember the old "studio E" at 4131½ Piedmont Avenue) to our current location which seems like a mansion in comparison! We originally had three co-directors (Richard Rosen, Clare Finn, and Rodney Yee), a very small selection of classes, and a one-page schedule. As you can see from the schedule you are holding now, we have grown to offer a wide variety of classes (including a teacher training program) and a magnificent array of teachers. We couldn't have done it without you! The instructors and staff thank you for your continued patronage and support of Piedmont Yoga Studio and Store. Please keep coming back and we'll have a huge party when we reach 20 years!

Ashtanga Yoga means the Eight Limbs of Yoga and entails universal precepts (yama), individual guidelines (niyama), postures (asana), breath channeling (pranayama), turning the senses inward (pratyahara), concentration (dharana), meditation (dhyana), and union (samadhi). Some of the main schools of yoga in the West (for example, Iyengar, Pattabhi Jois, and Desikachar) can be categorized as forms of Ashtanga Yoga.

The faculty of the Piedmont Yoga Studio has a strong background in the Iyengar tradition (this system emphasizes alignment, the use of props—if needed, and an in-depth understanding of the body, breath, and mind). Still, while our styles can be most closely linked with the Iyengar tradition, we are dedicated to the explorations and knowledge found in all traditions of yoga; each of us has incorporated other teachings and developed our unique gifts through our own practices.
