Peoples.coop Whole foods cooperative & community center in SE Portland

Founded in 1970, People's Co-op is a member-owned natural-foods grocery located in inner Southeast Portland.

Forty years after its founding, People's is thriving in a market that includes publicly-traded giant Whole Foods and locally-owned natural-foods chain New Seasons. The Portland area also boasts specialty food stores such as locally-owned Zupan's and national specialty chain Trader Joe's, as well as another successful natural-foods co-op, Food Front.

Local, Sustainable, Fresh and Vegetarian

People's is committed to selling produce and grocery items from small farmers and companies. You'll find things at people you won't find elsewhere, because the producers can't make enough to supply big chain stores.

Honoring its motto, "Don't Panic, It's Organic," People's sticks almost entirely to organic offerings. Any product that isn't organically produced has been carefully vetted by the co-op's buyers to make sure it's free of harmful chemicals and produced in a sustainable manner.

Apart from pet foods, People's stocks only foods that can be made without killing or harming animals.

Wednesday is Farmers Market day at People's. Small growers and food makers from in and around Portland offer their wares in the forecourt and the adjoining street.

People's is open every day of the year, including Christmas and New Years Day.

More Than a Food Store

There's more to healthy living than food. People's holds wellness classes and events in its newly extended quarters -- the first cob building to be approved by the city of Portland! Yoga and Qi Gong classes are available to co-op members at no extra charge.
