The Payson Roundup: Front page

Description

The Payson Roundup has been recognized as Newspaper of the Year for the past seven years (1999-2005) by the Arizona Newspaper Association. It was also honored in 2000 and 2001 by the Inland Press Association as the Nation's Best Newspaper for its size. The Roundup is the primary news and advertising source for the picturesque communities of the Rim country in central Arizona. The twice-weekly publication is based in Payson, a recreation and retirement community that's home to 13,600 souls who live within the largest stand of ponderosa pines in the world. The newspaper also serves Star Valley, a community that ranching built, and the quiet mountain hamlets of Pine and Strawberry at the base of the Mogollon Rim, a towering escarpment that spans most of Arizona and part of western New Mexico.

The Roundup's tradition of excellence can be traced back to 1937 when Bert Slater started the twice-a-month publication for the growing ranching communities in the Tonto Basin.

The Roundup, which only sold 200 issues a month during its early years, now has a circulation of more than 7,000.
