Title

International Palm Society -- Growing Palm Trees Worldwide

Description

Palms are very different from most plants; they aren't trees, really… or flowers, although they do flower. Palms are in a class of their own. There are feather leafed palms and fan leafed palms; towering single trunk types and tiny multiple stem ones; some which live in deserts, others on mountain tops, and those which flourish in lush tropical rainforests. A few are thorny porcupines of the plant world, while others are sleek graceful specimens.

You might be surprised to know that several thousand different species of palms exist, and quite a few are as happy indoors as they are in their native habitats. Some cold tolerant palms thrive in landscapes as far north as British Columbia along Canada's west coast and on snow capped peaks of the Himalayas.

These versatile plants are also important sources of food, fiber, oil, wine, and building material for many countries throughout the world. In tropical and subtropical regions, palms provide exotic landscape specimens of all shapes and sizes. Many cultivated species of palms are popular houseplants easily grown by anyone almost anywhere. In Japan, cultivars of Rhapis excelsa, a small clustering "Lady Palm", are prized possessions often displayed in elegant, hand-enameled pots as interior accents.
