Located in the Southeastern U.S., Florida is 100 miles north of the tropics and Florida's southern tip is 1,700 miles north of the Equator. It is the oldest permanent European settlement in the USA. Spanish colonists established the town of St. Augustine in 1565 and never left.

The States most important agricultural crop is citrus fruit: oranges, lemons and grapefruit - Florida grows 70% of the world's grapefruit crop. Spanish settlers brought the orange to Florida originally, but the grapefruit arrived from the West Indies in 1823 when a Frenchman planed the first trees near Tampa Bay.

Miami is the largest city and Latino residents especially Cuban émigrés and their descendants make up more than half the city's population. Tampa bay on the Gulf Coast is one of the fastest growing cities in the US, thanks in part to the economic boom created by its large harbor.
