Dr. Claude G. Matasa |
The founder, Dr. Matasa is a professor at the University of Illinois, Chicago and has authored many chapters in books and articles and is a world recognized lecturer. His chapter on Orthodontic Biomaterials continues to be a part of the most important text book in orthodontics.
Additionally, their newsletter The Orthodontic Materials Insider recently celebrated its 20 years anniversary June 2007 PDF .
A Simple Idea
The story of Ortho-Cycle is a simple one. Dr. Matasa saw the opportunity to grow a business using the popular three R's - Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. However, in 1973 those ideas were not mainstream, but belonged only to the visionaries of the time. Dr. Matasa watched sophisticated instruments, made from the best stainless steel, as expensive as fine watches, being thrown away daily. How could people use these tools and materials all the time and yet not stop to think about reusing orthodontic instruments?, Dr. Matasa asked himself.
Currently, Ortho-Cycle has thousands of clients all over the world – primarily institutions and orthodontic doctors in the United States and Western Europe. While there can be a social stigma of using used orthodontic equipment, it is not one that effects Ortho-Cycle's bottom line.
Better than new
Reused orthodontic materials from Ortho-Cycle are of better quality and safer than new instruments.
- Quality -- Manufacturers of new orthodontic equipment use a process called Statistical Inspection, where only 1-10% of new materials are inspected. Ortho-Cycle's materials are purchased directly from dentists and institutions. Then Ortho-Cycle's experts inspect them to determine eligibility for reuse. Therefore, every item is inspected rather than just the 1-10% of new equipment. read more
- Safety -- Newly manufactured orthodontic equipment is often produced in low labor cost situations which also means low health care situations. Additionally the sanitation processes are less stringent than those of recyclers like Ortho-Cycle, which are thoroughly tested. A recycled piece of orthodontic equipment is sterilized twice and Ortho-Cycle has to pass a FDA sterilizing CE Mark. Their products are inspected by ISO, FDA and CE Mark whereas new orthodontic products aren't. read more
- Cost Effective -- Ortho-Cycle's procedures allow for equipment that is exactly the same as the new material, in new condition with a lower price. Ortho-Cycle allows dentists and institutions an additional revenue source by buying what was formerly discarded. read more
- Environmental Impact -- In addition to reusing materials, Ortho-Cycle helps save the environment by keeping contaminants from your drinking water. Nickel and chromium are heavy metals from the stainless steel used in orthodontic materials that disintegrate and can leech into the soil and ground water in landfills. read more

Additional Information
When asked what inspired him to take the hard road of building a business of reused orthodontic attachments, he modestly responded quoting Edmund Hillary when asked why he climbed Mt. Everest: "Cause it was there.", adding, however, "that he hopes this will help people to still receive the best care at a lower price".
